UTI or urinary tract infection is a disease which is described as pain and discomfort during micturition. It is termed as Mutrakriccha in Ayurveda. It is basically an infection involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. The most important symptom is defined as dysuria commonly caused by pathogenic organism E.coli in 90% of the cases. Other micro organisms found are Enterobacter,  Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Proteus. 

E.coli lives in the colon and around the anus. An infection occurs when bacteria gets into the bladder or kidney and begins growing ones it get inside. The infection often starts at the opening of the urethra where the urine leaves the body and moves upward into the urinary tract. Abnormalities of the urinary tract that hinder the flow of urine set the stage for an infection. It is also noted that women are more prone to the disease.

Ayurveda considers UTI to be an increase in Pitta and vata. 

There are many formulations as well as single herbs that can be used to treat Urinary infections without the use of allopathic antibiotics. Here is a list of the ones which are known to be most effective.

Best Ayurvedic Medicines To Use

1. Chandraprabha Vati

Chandraprabha vati is a classical Ayurvedic preparation, which is most frequently prescribed in urinary tract infections, bladder related issues, general weakness and joint pains. It is a cooling and pitta balancing medicine, which controls the burning sensation while urination, itching and pain associated with UTI or any other bladder related issue.

Apart from these issue, it is also found to be useful in prameha (Diabetes) due to its anti hyperglycemic activity. Other classical uses of this medicine are abdominal distension, constipation, colic pain, cysts, anaemia, jaundice, urinary obstruction, Calculus, lower backache, skin diseases, menorrhagia and more.

2. Chandrakala Ras For UTI

Chandrakala ras is a classical preparation which is primarily used diabetes and neuropathy related to it. Lesser known use of this medicine is in case of UTI. It is an excellent herbal remedy for urinary infections. It is a pitta reducing medicine which is indicated for dysuria and burning sensation during urination. 

Other issues where the medicine is used are haematemesis and hemoptysis, burning of hands and feet, excessive thirst and sweating, jaundice, anemia, menorrhagia and leucorrhea.

3. Kshar Parpati / Shweta Parpati

Sweta parpati is an ancient formulation which is a combination of Kalami short (Potassium nitrate), Phitkari (Potash Alum) and Navsadar (Ammonium chloride). All ingredients are purified to a level that the combination becomes a powerful medicine with great effects of all kidney and urinary problems. 

It is indicated in kidney stones or calculi, scanty urination, painful urination or dysuria, and UTI. It relieves itching, irritation and burning sensation in the urinary organs. It eases the passage of urine.

Phitkari present in the medicine is responsible for eliminating the growth of bacteria and other micro organisms. Other two ingredients helps increase the urine output and frequency so the toxins can be eliminated quickly from the body.

A single dose 125mg to a max of 500mg can be taken with Luke warm water before or after meal twice a day.

4. Gokshuradi Guggulu

Gokshuradi gugglu as the name suggests is a herbal formulation made with the combination of gokshura, shuddha guggulu, black pepper, pippali, ginger, amla, bibhitaki, haritaki and mustak. It has amazing benefits when it comes to the functioning of genitourinary tract. 

Due to its antilithiatic properties, it breaks and further prevents the formation of kidney or urinary tract stones. It also works greatly in the treatment of urinary tract infections and difficulty is urination. It diminishes the growth of micro organisms due to its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It nutralizes the excess acidity in urine and causes frequent urination. It is indicated in UTI as well as dysuria. All in all it is a great medicine for strengthening the urinary and reproductive system.

How To Use For UTI?

For UTI, it is best to consume gokshuradi guggulu (500mg – 1gm) in combination with yashad bhasma (25mg – 125mg max), gandhak rasayan (250mg – 500mg) and chandanadi vati (500mg – 1gm).  As an adjuvant, chandansava is also given.

A max dosage of 6gm a day can be given but safe dosage well tolerable dosage is 3gm max per day.

5. Chandanasava

Chandanasava is a cooling formulation with as the name suggests Chandan or white sandalwood is its main ingredient. It is highly beneficial to cool the vitiated pitta down. The medicine is indicated mainly in kidney, urinary tract and bladder related disorders like burning urination, UTI, kidney stones, dysuria, pyuria (pus in the urine due to bacterial infection), cystitis, chronic kidney failure, uric acid, pyospermia and gonorrhea. 

It has lithontriptic and antilithiatic action which makes it effective in dissolving and preventing the formation of kidney stones.

When used specifically for UTI or pyuria, it shows strong antimicrobial action which wards off bacterial growth. It cools off the heat and gets rid of pitta symptoms like burning sensation and foul smell in urine.

How To Use For UTI?

When it is given along with vang bhasma, chandraprabha vati, chandanadi vati and guluchyadi kashayam, it shows great results. Dosage is about 12-24 ml with equal amount of water after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

6. Neeri Syrup For UTI

Neeri syrup is a proprietary ayurvedic medicine by Aimil Pharma specially useful for kidney stones and urinary infections. It contains anti calcifying properties which dissolve and helps spontaneous passage of calculi. It is also extremely effective in killing the micro organisms like E.coli which are responsible for UTI. It prevents the reoccurrence of all sorts of urinary disorders and improves the functioning of kidney, prostate, uterus and urinary bladder.

1. Varuna (Crataeva Nurvala) For UTI & Kidney Stones

Varuna is a wonderful herb that is mentioned in most of the Ayurvedic texts for its benefits for urinary disorders. The decoction prepared from the bark of Varuna tree,   helps control pain and burning sensation due to its diuretic properties.

It is also an amazing herb for treating renal calculi. It helps break and reduce the size of the stone. Because of Asmaribhedan (penetration) property exhibited by the herb, it is able to break down large chunks of stone into smaller pieces. Varuna also being diuretic in nature helps to expel stones out of the body easily. It is helpful in all types of kidney-related issues due to its property of decreasing the production of oxalate which is the main reason for the formation of calculi and calcium salts.
