Sarivadyasava which is in the form of a fermented brown liquid is prepared with a number of ingredients which are left to ferment which is why the liquid contains around 5 to10% self-generated alcohol content.

The most important ingredient in Sarivadyasava is Sariva or Hemisdesmus indicus. Also called Indian Sarsaparilla, it is an important herb used in the treatment of disorders like oligospermia, gastritis and anorexia. In Ayurveda, this herb is called Ananthamoola. Ayurveda identifies two varieties of Sariva – Shveta Sariva and Krishna Sariva; but both have similar therapeutic action on the body. Sometimes Sariva also forms a part of many traditional cuisines. Fermentation with Sariva provides the mixture with the alcoholic property and has an antinociceptive (Any substance that inhibits the sensation of pain) activity.

Method Of Preparation

The following steps need to be followed to prepare Sarivadyasava:

  1. All the ingredients are washed, dried and powdered.
  2. Water is taken in an Asava vessel or an earthen pot and the powdered ingredients are added and mixed well in water.
  3. The pot is then covered with a clay smeared cloth and left in a secure place for at least 30 days.
  4. After 30 days of the fermentation process, the liquid is filtered and this liquid is called Sarivadyasava. It is then stored in dark airtight bottles.
